About VoltSolar
Empowering clean energy transition through transparent data modeling.
VoltSolar was created to address one of the most common questions facing modern drivers: “Can I power my electric vehicle entirely using solar energy from my roof?”
Traditional solar calculators only ask for your current utility bill in dollars, which fails completely if you recently purchased an electric vehicle or are planning to buy one. VoltSolar solves this problem by directly calculating the relationship between real-world vehicle efficiency, daily commute distances, local solar irradiance, and charging schedules.
Methodology & Data Sources
- Vehicle Efficiency: EPA official ratings and independent highway real-world range benchmarks.
- Solar Irradiance: PVWatts v8 average peak sun hours for one representative city per state (from the national lab formerly called NREL, compiled by The Green Watt, April 2026), with an 18% allowance for system losses.
- Costs & Incentives: EIA national average electricity rates and typical installed solar prices. Estimates exclude incentives: the 30% federal Residential Clean Energy Credit (Section 25D) ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025, and state or utility rebates vary by location.
- Full details: every formula, default number and source is explained, with a worked example, in How Our Solar EV Calculator Works.
How We Write and Check Our Guides
Every guide on VoltSolar is checked against the same calculator you can use on our home page, so the panel counts, costs and savings in our articles match what the tool shows. We link every source we rely on, such as the EPA, the EIA, utility rate sheets and state regulators, and we show the date of the data we used.
When a guide uses an example household, we say clearly that it is an example and not a real customer. When rules or prices change, such as the end of the federal solar tax credit or a new net metering decision, we update the affected guides and their "last updated" date. If you spot a number that looks wrong, please tell us through our contact form and we will check it.
